5 Ways to Stay Hydrated While Traveling

Long flights, lots of walking, and high altitudes are all easy ways to become dehydrated. Traveling can be exhausting, especially if you aren’t properly hydrated. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, which is the last thing you want to feel when you’re exploring a new place. Even if hydration is already a daily habit, it’s easy to fall out of your routines while traveling. Follow these tips to stay on top of your hydration on your next trip!

Pack A Water Bottle

Carrying around a water bottle while traveling doesn’t seem ideal. However, the inconvenience is worth it when you think about the side-effects of dehydration. Yeti, Hydroflask, and S’well all make travel-friendly water bottles that also keep your water cold throughout the day. Replenish your water bottle any chance you get, whether it’s at the airport, your hotel, or a local coffee shop!

Start and End Your Day Hydrated

While you sleep, your body has no water source. So when you wake up, you’re starting the day off dehydrated. Make it your habit to drink a glass or two of water before you head out for the day. Also, after a long day of sight-seeing, having a glass of water before bed can make a huge difference in how you feel the next morning.

Stay Balanced

We know you want to try out the local coffee shops, breweries, and bars, so we aren’t going to say, “stay away from coffee and alcohol.” Sure they contain mostly water, but they’re also diuretics. Therefore, you’ll be losing more water than you’re gaining and will only exacerbate your dehydration status. Be sure to hydrate (with water) between these beverages.

Do a Hydration Check

Fatigue, headaches, dizziness, and dry mouth are all signs of dehydration. As soon as you start to feel these symptoms, stop what you are doing, and drink some water. Another way to check in with your hydration status is to check the color of your urine. Your urine should be clear or light yellow throughout the day. If you’re properly hydrated, you should be urinating every 1-2 hours. Try to stay mindful and be aware of how you are feeling because it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of traveling.

Travel can take a toll on your hydration. If you are doing any sorts of outdoor activities and spending time in the sun, you are likely losing valuable electrolytes through sweat.
